The Burgin Lady Bulldogs (1-13) are still in search of their first win in 2019 after a 60-19 loss to Washington County (4-12) in the first round of the 12th Region All-A Classic, hosted by the Commanderettes.
Eighth grader Kaiden Lewis led Burgin in scoring with seven points. Sophomore Hannah Stewart was right behind Lewis with six points, all coming from behind the arc.
Burgin’s youth and inexperience showed against a Washington County team led by their senior leading scorer, Madison Snellen. She led the Commanderettes in scoring with a game-high 23 points, including four triples.
“I thought we played a little scared at first. They hit five three-pointers pretty early and we got our heads down,” said Head Coach Keith Monson.
Washington County led 26-3 after one, and 37-9 at the half.
Despite the loss, Monson has a very young team, and he has seen tremendous strides from them since the beginning of the season.
“I feel we are improving on our ball movement and learning how to play,” said Monson. “We need to get stronger with the ball and learn what it takes to finish the play. We are struggling with scoring, but they have a great attitude and work hard each day in practice. Hopefully it will start clicking for us.”
To speak to the youth of the Lady Bulldogs, Baleigh Turner, an eighth grader, leads the team in scoring at six points per game. Lauren Edwards and Kaiden Lewis are second on the team with four points per game. Lewis and Edwards are also eighth graders.
Freshman Grace Cocanougher scored four points, while fellow frosh Brynn Simpson scored two points to round out Burgin’s scoring.
The Lady Bulldogs will be back on the court this Friday, Jan. 25, when they host St. Francis at 6 p.m.
SCORING: Kaiden Lewis 7, Hannah Stewart 6, Grace Cocanougher 4, Brynn Simpson 2.
REBOUNDS: Simpson 4, Julia Holton 3, Lauren Edwards 2, Cocanougher 1, Baleigh Turner 1, Avery Gray 1.
ASSISTS: Edwards 1, Ellie Jenkins 1, Turner 1, Simpson 1.
