After losing to the West Jessamine Colts for the third time this season, the Mercer County Lady Titans soccer (5-11-2) team had to immediately bounce back and prepare for the 12th region tournament. It looks like the preparation has paid off after the Lady Titans defeated the Somerset Lady Jumpers by a final score of 3-0 on Monday, Oct. 16.
Mercer controlled the game from the opening whistle and never looked back.
Freshman Bella Garrett got Mercer started with a goal from the right side of the goalie’s box to put the Lady Titans up 1-0 in the seventh minute of the game.
Shortly after, a shot by senior Alyssa Howard sailed over the post for a Somerset goal kick. Freshman Abby Dean also had a chance, but wasn’t able to convert. That’s what kind of night it was for Mercer. As soon as the ball would be put back in play, the Lady Titans’ attack started.
Somerset had trouble all night long to keep up with the Mercer front line and had trouble all game getting the ball past the back line.
Head Coach Josh Culver was happy with his team’s performance in a do or die game and talked about what his team has to do to keep this momentum.
“Our intensity level has to be high right from the start,” he said. “The first half we weren’t really connecting on passes but the second half was much better. We played more as a unit and for each other.”
