A high school athlete living out their dream to play at the next level has become something of a norm in Mercer County, and the list just keeps on growing.

Titan baseball player, Jake Newby, has signed to continue his baseball career at Georgetown College for the fall of 2017.

“Georgetown was honestly out of nowhere, because I had no idea they were scouting me,” said Newby. “One day, Georgetown’s coach contacted me and requested for me to take a visit there.”

During the visit, Newby was surprised by the offer, and gladly accepted it. According to Newby, Georgetown was the perfect place because it has a relatively small student base, it’s close to home and Lexington is a short distance away.

This season has been a frustrating one for Newby and his parents, Jennifer and Shane. Newby injured his left bicep and tricep prior to the season. Trying to get back quickly, Newby overworked it and wasn’t able to suit up with his team the rest of the season. Before the injury, Newby’s primary position was first base or the designated hitter, and he will be playing the same position in college.

Newby played in two games this season, against Rockcastle and Bullitt East, and felt pain in both areas and couldn’t continue.
