Planning & Zoning Plays Role In Community Development

“The purpose of the planning commission is to help regulate and plan for land development, future land use, growth and things like that,” said Shawn Moore, executive director of the Greater Harrodsburg/Mercer County Planning and Zoning Commission. The organization itself is an independent government entity and although partially funded by both, it is not part of the city or county governments.

Moore said joint planning commissions are set up separate from city and county government to remove politics from land use decisions. “The general idea behind that was that we have an independent body who regulates these kinds of things,” he said.
