Norfolk Southern To Replace Mercer Railroad Crossings
Here’s some bad news for local motorists: the railroad plans to replace and resurface every crossing between Danville and Lawrenceburg.
To prevent Mercer County from turning into a parking lot, Norfolk Southern is dividing the project into two phases. In December, they will work on the two main crossings in Harrodsburg. In February 2017 they will concentrate on the rest of Mercer County.
A Norfolk Southern crew will close the College Street crossing starting at approximately 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The next week, the crew will close the crossing on East Lexington Avenue starting at approximately 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13, to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14. However, the exact time for the work is fluid, said Kyle H. Moore, assistant track supervisor at Norfolk Southern.
“We will do our best to avoid morning and afternoon school or business traffic but we cannot guarantee a certain time during those dates,” Moore said.
Work on the remaining crossings should take about a month, running from Feb. 21 to March 21.
