Like many kids growing up in Central Kentucky, Mason Hazelwood always dreamed about being a University of Kentucky Wildcat. The 6-foot-6-inch Mercer County pitcher got one step closer to making that dream a reality on Wednesday, July 13, after announcing via the social media website Twitter that he had committed to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) school.
“It has been a dream of mine to go to Kentucky for as long as I can remember,” said Hazewlood, who was also recruited by Eastern Kentucky University, the University of Cincinnati, Penn State University and several other Division-1 schools.
Hazelwood has been a sought after pitcher not only because of his height, but also because he has a fastball that has reached the low 90s. Mercer County Head Coach Jeremy Shope said there is still even more potential for him to grow as well.
“Mason is nowhere near his peak. The sky is the limit for him,” said Shope.
