The No. 15 Mercer County soccer team had their season come to an end Monday night as they fell 2-1 to No. 3 Henry Clay in the first round of the state tournament.
Henry Clay held a 2-0 halftime lead, after Braxton Burton connected on two goals with under ten minutes left in the first half.
Burton’s first goal came on a header with seven minutes left in the first half.
He struck again shortly after.
With three minutes left, Burton scored off an assist from Nick Whitehouse, extending the lead to two goals.
“They were a good team and we knew they would be. They proved that in the first half,” said Mercer County Head Coach Garrett Stark. “They came out and played with speed, possessed the ball well, attacked from different angles and they were able to get some goals on us.”
The Titans came out in the second half controlling the tempo, which helped them narrow the gap early, as Garrett Dean scored his ninth goal of the season on a penalty kick just four minutes into the second half.
