The Mercer County Lady Titans soccer team knew they would have to play a near perfect game Tuesday night if they wanted to knock off the 12th Region favorite Boyle County in the first round of the 12th Region Tournament. Although they played well, the Lady Titans didn’t have quite enough to beat the No. 5 Lady Rebels, falling 3-0.
Mercer County controlled the tempo early in the game, before the Lady Rebels broke through for their first and only goal of the first half.
Senior Meghan Paynter put the ball in the back of the net after a cross from Emmie Harris landed right at her feet with 18 minutes left.
But what Mercer County Head Coach Tony Brown was most impressed with was the way his team responded to falling behind.
“Our team doesn’t rollover. There was no doubt in my mind that we would continue to fight until the end,” said Brown. “There is a little bit of a rivalry between Mercer County and Boyle County soccer because these girls have played club soccer together in the past. So I knew there wasn’t any chance the girls would lay down without a fight.”
Mercer County did put up a fight for the next 41 minutes.
With 17 minutes left in the game Harris scored a goal off of a penalty kick from 35 yards out, putting Boyle County ahead 2-0.
