In a battle of top-25 teams, the 24th-ranked Mercer County Titans soccer team downed the visiting 12th-ranked Woodford County Yellow Jackets, 3-1, Tuesday night.

The score remained tied, 0-0, at halftime, despite both teams having seven shots, but the second half was a different story.

Seven minutes into the second half Woodford County senior Chandler Ping scored, placing the ball in the top right corner on Mercer’s goal.

It didn’t take long for Mercer County to respond.

A shot by Mercer junior Nick McClain was deflected to the feet of teammate Cody Shackelford, who was unmarked. Shakelford with an open look at the net was able to place his shot past Woodford County goalkeeper Jack Batman, tying the game, 1-all.

“I think it showed a lot of discipline for us to respond that quickly,” said Mercer County Head Coach Garrett Stark.

Five minutes later Mercer County sophomore Brandon Ballard scored off an assist from Drew Angel, putting the Titans ahead, 2-1.
