The Mercer County Lady Titans volleyball team won their first match of the season Monday night, beating Burgin 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-12).

With the first game tied, 8-8, the Lady Titans went on a 9-2 run to move out in front 17-10. After a timeout by Burgin Head Coach Clay Hall, the Lady Bulldogs rallied their way right back into the game, winning the next five points.

The two teams remained close for the rest of the game, but the Lady Bulldogs never could quite catch up, falling 25-23.

“It was really important for us to win that first game. We didn’t want to lose that game and have our backs against the wall,” said Lady Titans Head Coach Marci Wilham.

Burgin got out to a quick 9-6 lead in game two, but strong serving from Mercer’s Kennedy Bryant and Janelle Taylor helped the Lady Titans reverse the roles.

Mercer won seven of the next nine points, taking a 13-11 lead by the time Bryant and Taylor were done serving.
