Lady Titans use summer tourney to prepare

Mercer County Lady Titan basketball player Lexy Lake took the ball toward the basket in the Girl’s Basketball Summer State Tournament Sunday afternoon.

The Mercer County Lady Titans are coming off the best season in school history and head coach Chris Souder knows if they want to improve on that success next season, the team needs to put in a lot of work over the summer.

Last season, the Lady Titans won the 46th District Tournament, the 12th Region Tournament and advanced to the KHSAA State Tournament for the first time since the merger of Harrodsburg High School and Mercer County High School in 2006. They also won a school record 29 games. But Souder knows the Lady Titans will have to improve over the summer if they hope to top such a remarkable season.

“Right now I am still looking for someone, other than Seygan (Robins), to really step up and take control when we need it. There have been a couple of games (this summer) where she has been gone to camps and I really haven’t seen anyone take the initiative,” said Souder.

A lot of the summer work came last weekend as the Lady Titans played in the Girl’s Basketball Summer State Tournament at the Kentucky Basketball Academy (KBA) in Lexington.

On Saturday evening, the Lady Titans opened pool play by defeating South Laurel 63-39. In their second game of the night, Mercer County lost 73-71 to Henry Clay.
