Team of the Year

The Mercer County girls basketball team started the season with one goal: making it to the KHSAA Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament, held at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green.

“We broke down our huddles yelling ‘Diddle’ because that is our ultimate goal. If you repeat it every day it gets in your head. As you get closer and closer you realize how reachable is is,” said Mercer County Lady Titans Head Coach Chris Souder. “After being so close and losing in the regional championship game last season (a 68-58 loss to Danville) Diddle meant a lot more.”

Not only did they accomplish that goal, they did it in dominating fashion, going 29-4 and finishing with the most single season wins in school history.

“We had a tough schedule so I told the girls that although we may not win as many games as we had in the past, it would benefit us. But to get that record is a testament to the kids. They put in so much work,” said Souder.

The Lady Titans started the season with an 8-0 record, before dropping two in a row. With an 8-2 record they won 21 of their next 22 games, to help them go into the state tournament with a 29-3 record.

“Toward the middle of the season we kind of got away from the style we wanted to play and we just wanted to get back to the style we were use to playing and it worked out well,” said Souder.
