Houston Leads Lady Titans in Region Opener

Mercer County freshman Emma Davis, left, drove the ball to the basket around Wayne County defender Megan Burchett, right, during the opening round of the 12th Region Tournament Tuesday.
Mercer County sophomore Lyric Houston finished with 14 points, nine steals and three assists and helped lead the Lady Titans to a, 91-69, first round 12th Region Tournament victory over the Wayne County Lady Cardinals Tuesday night.
Freshman Seygan Robins added 17 points and seven assists, while Emma Davis finished with 15 points and three steals. Emmy Souder added eight points and six steals.
The Lady Titans came out strong on the defensive end, and didn’t allow Wayne County to score for the first 2:12 of the game. Mercer led, 6-0, when the Lady Cardinals got their first basket.
Mercer County continued their press defense for the remaining 5:48 of the quarter, forcing 16 turnovers and taking a, 22-12, lead.
“We came out really good, but then we kind of had a little let down and let them right back,” said Mercer County Head Coach Chris Souder.
Souder’s team didn’t force as many turnovers in the second quarter, but the Lady Titan’s defense was still stifling. They forced 10 more turnovers in the quarter, and out scored Wayne County, 23-9, building a, 45-21, lead at halftime.
“We try to wear you down and we are playing a lot of these kids so it eventually takes its toll,” said Souder.
