Claunch Has Night to Remember

Mercer County Lady Titan Catheryne Claunch will remember her last game at Mercer County Senior High School gymnasium for a long time.

It was a unique night for the senior as she and three other seniors were recognized for their contributions over the course of their careers prior to the game. It was even all the more interesting that her father, Todd, who escorted her during the senior night festivities was coaching for the opposing Casey County Lady Rebels.

“It was special to get to play against him in my last game here. I’m thankful that Coach Souder worked it in so that he would be able to walk with me because most of the time he has a game the same nights we do,” said Catheryne Claunch.

Although that would have been plenty to remember, she made sure to add a little more to the night to make it even more special.

The senior, who sat out last season after the birth of her daughter, opened the scoring with a three-pointer and scored nine of the Lady Titans first 11 points to help them out to a quick 11-0 lead just 1:23 into the game.

“Every time I come out, especially since I sat out last year, I am ready to play because I know this is my last year,” added Claunch, who finished with 18 points.

Mercer County added two more points to lead 13-0 before the Lady Rebels got their first two points on free-throws with 5:14 left in the first quarter.

The Lady Titans continued to push the tempo as they got up by as much as 21 in the quarter, 27-6, with 2:21 remaining. Casey County ended the quarter on a 6-2 run to close the gap to 29-12 at the end of one.
