Sayre Spartans ‘Too Tall’ of a Task for Bulldogs

Burgin sophomore Jordan Hurst, left, went up for a shot over Sayre’s Zach Jones, right, Thursday night. Hurst finished with 8 points in the loss.

The Sayre Spartans’ height ended up being the key difference in their 77-47 victory over the Burgin Bulldogs Thursday night.

The Spartans (who had two players who stood over 6-feet-6-inches) and the Bulldogs were in a close contest through one quarter.

Both teams hit most of their shots in the first quarter and the Bulldogs seemed like they were going to end the half with the lead, but a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Sayre sophomore Jake Duby sent the Spartans to a 19-17 lead after one.

“We got out to a decent start. We got a few things in transition. However, we did get ourself in foul trouble early, which kind of changed the way we wanted to do things,” said Burgin Head Coach Brian Kirk after the game.

The second quarter is when things started to fall apart for the Bulldogs, as the size of Sayre started to wear them down.
