Titans Come Up Short to Somerset in 12th Region

After a thrilling overtime win against the Warriors of Southwestern Pulaski in the opening round of the 12th Region Tournament, the Mercer County Titans fell flat against the Briar Jumpers of Somerset in the semifinal round, 58-48.

“That’s why you play the game. Coming in Tuesday night, I’m sure no one expected that outcome,” said Mercer Head Coach Brian Britt. “To be honest with you, coming in tonight I didn’t expect this outcome. I felt like we had a game plan that would be effective.”

The two teams looked evenly matched through the first four minutes of the game with the score level at 7-all. Somerset’s defense clamped down on Mercer after that, holding them scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, taking a 16-7 lead.

“We didn’t move the ball. It seems like every time we caught the ball, we held it for a split-second too long instead of catching and reversing and making their defense move. We settled for the outside shot Tuesday night and  hit it, and tonight we didn’t instead of getting to the basket,” Britt said.
