It’s been a busy year for  15-year-old Kaylee Russell. In addition to being a member of the Mercer County softball and basketball programs, she has also been competing across the nation in numerous horse shows.

Russell, who began showing horses in the first grade, had one of her most successful years in the sport winning the 2012 Kentucky Quarter Horse Association’s youth and novice youth division points championship for 14-18 year olds in both showmanship and horsemanship categories.

“This sport is super based on hard work and trust between the rider and the horse,” said Russell on what drew her to horse riding. “My mom, Tricia Russell, is a trainer so I’ve been around horses from a very young age and began working and showing them in the first grade.”

Russell attributes her success in showing horses to the experience she got working with her mother and family.
