The Lady Titans suffered their third road loss of the season Tuesday night falling to 12th Region opponent Danville, 67-57. The Lady Admirals jumped out on Mercer early with a 13-2 lead due in part to foul trouble on the Lady Titans.
“Once again we had a terrible start,” said Mercer Head Coach Chris Souder. “The foul trouble forced us to sit some of our starters and took us out of rhythm on the offensive end.”
Mercer showed poise one might expect from a Souder coached team and were able to fight their way back into contention taking a four point lead into halftime, 32-28.
More scoring struggles plagued the Lady Titans to begin the second half putting Mercer in another deep hole.
“We started the third quarter just like we did the first and just had a long dry spell where we either could not score or we just simply did not convert in transition situations,” said Souder.
This time Mercer was unable to dig their way out falling 67-57. The Lady Titans shot under 50 percent from the free throw line, 9 of 20, which ended up being the difference in the game.
“We are going to be a good team and our schedule has been tough to start the year, but we still feel like this will be beneficial to us in the long run,” Souder said.
Listed below are individual player’s scoring totals:
Mercer (3-1) – Cassidy Martin 24, Catheryne Claunch 8, Heidi Huffman 8, Carli Souder 6, Raegan Freeman 4, Kandace Gash 3, Lyric Houston 3, Madaline Bartley 1.
The Lady Titans are back in action this Friday, Dec. 14 in their 46th District opener at home against East Jessamine (3-1) at 7:30 p.m. and then return to action Saturday Dec. 15 at home against Nelson County (4-2). Mercer will honor former player Tabby Shewmaker during halftime of Friday’s game by retiring her softball jersey.
