The Lady Bulldogs picked up their first win in their season opener Tuesday night under the leadership of new Head Coach Ray Daniels, defeating the Wildcats of Lynn Camp High School, 61-51.
“Anytime you win it’s a good win,” said Daniels. “I really don’t want to make this season about myself or the coaching staff, it’s about the girls. Only being with the team for the past six days right now we are just trying to make up for lost time. I’m still learning what former coach Chris Myers had the team running and as the season goes on I’ll look to add my fingerprint to the program.”
After a back and forth opening five minutes of action, the score remained level, 6-all. The Lady Wildcats ended the first quarter with a 6-0 run taking a 12-6 lead into the second quarter. Burgin picked up their defensive pressure in the second quarter as they began chipping away at Lynn Camp’s lead.
“We want to press and pressure other teams,” said Daniels. “We feel like we have players that can put pressure on the ball in Liz (Marcinek), Summer (Burke) and Randi (Burke) and thought we could force their guards into turnovers and cause a little havoc.”
Burgin did just that, forcing the Lady Wildcats into five second quarter turnovers and 27 in the entire game. Those forced turnovers helped the Lady Bulldogs tie the score, 27-all, going into halftime.
