After another injury plagued season for Burgin senior Alex Beckerson, who suffered two different knee injuries, he was able to put all that behind him finishing 3rd overall in the Region 5 Class A cross country meet Saturday in Danville.

Beckerson, who medaled in the state meet his sophomore season, had hopes of competing for a state title. He finished Saturday’s race just over the 17 and half minute mark at  17:37, nearly a minute behind first place Nick Waltman of Owen County who came in at 16:39. Beckerson’s time was good enough to qualify him for the state meet scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

The Bulldogs finished fifth overall with a team score of 116. Trimble County took first place with a team score of 54 with Owen County and Bracken County finishing second and third respectfully with scores of 79 and 94.

Listed below are place finished, names and individual times for all of Burgin’s runners: 3rd, Alex Beckerson, 16:39; 22nd, Charles Holsinger, 22:00; 25th, Cooper Shearer, 20:04; 29th, Nick Beckerson, 20:19; 43rd, Trevor Lay, 21:30; 46th, Michael McKenzie, 21:41; 58th, Zack Curtsinger; 24:25.

In Class 2A, Lady Titan sophomore Taylor Gray finished inside the top 10 qualifying for the state meet with a time of 22:58.98, one minute and 50 seconds behind winner Nikki Coffey of Boyle County who won with a time of 21:08.99.

Cold weather and sickness hindered the region’s top rated Mercer County boy’s team from winning their first 5th Region championship.

The Titans finished third overall, behind first place Wayne County and second place West Jessamine. While third place wasn’t the gold Mercer was hoping for, it was good enough to qualify the entire team for the state meet Saturday.
