The Burgin co-ed soccer team finished out their season with a win in the Eagle Cup  tournament held in Louisville, their second win of the season. The Bulldogs defeated the hosting Evangel Christian Eagles, 3-2.

Burgin opened the tournament against the Bears of Brown High School (8-11) of Louisville, also a co-ed team.

The Bears would take the match, 3-1, with Burgin sophomore, John Logan Price scoring the Bulldogs’ only goal of the match in the second half off an assist from junior Megan Hughes.

Scoring was a troubled area for the Bulldogs all season long  totaling 190 shots on target, but coming away with just six goals coming into the game.

Burgin faced Evangel Christian in their second game of the tournament with the Eagles and Bulldogs fighting for third place.

Price continued to lead the Bulldogs on offense, scoring their first two goals, both in the opening half. Senior Seth Royalty found Price in the Eagle’s 18-yard-box midway through the half for the game’s opening goal. Minutes later, freshman Mariah Johnson found Price lurking in front of Evangel Christian’s goal for his second of the game. The Eagles answered with a goal of their own late in the period and trailed, 2-1 going into halftime. The Eagles carried the momentum of their late first half goal into the second period scoring in the opening minutes and tying the game, 2-all.

The two teams continued to battle through the second half with each defending off the others attack keeping the score level as the clock ticked away. With less than 10 minutes left in regulation it looked like the game would go into extra time and a possible shoot out, that was until the 72nd minute when Hughes found Price deep in Eagle’s territory for the go ahead goal. It was Price’s third  goalof the game.

Burgin’s defense was able to hold strong for the final eight minutes of regulation to secure the win, 3-2. Price’s hat trick matched the Bulldog’s season high scoring total that came in their only other win of the season over Washington County which also ended in a 3-2 score.

Price and Hughes were also named to the All-Tournament team. The tournaments championship game was between Brown and Rock Creek Christian out of Indiana. Rock Creek Christian took the championship, winning the game, 2-0.
