Lady Titans Fall to West 3-0

The Lady Titans volleyball team was unable to achieve their 10th win in regular season Tuesday night when they fell 3-0 to the 12th Region number two seed, the Lady Colts of West Jessamine (23-5). While Mercer Head Coach David Sullivan was disappointed with his team’s loss, he remained optimistic on the team’s future.
“Last year we were the very last team in the region and won one match,” Sullivan said. “This year we have the 11th best record in the region and came away with nine wins beating teams we thought we should beat and playing hard against some of the tougher opponents we’ve faced.”
Mercer showed that toughness through the first set exchanging point for point with the Lady Colts and trailing by one point, 11-10, near the midway point. From there, West Jessamine began to show their dominant form winning nine of the next 10 points taking a commanding 20-12 lead.
West closed the set pulling away with a 25-15 win.
Mercer fell behind early in the second set, 10-2 and was unable to fight their way back losing, 25-11. The Lady Colts repeated their success in the third game with another 25-11 win taking the match, 3-0. Mercer kicks off the 46th District Tournament Tuesday, Oct. 9 against cross town rival Burgin. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be held at East Jessamine High School in Nicholasville.
“We are going to have to hit the ball consistantly and often to have success in the district tournament,” Sullivan said. “I told the team we can’t expect for Burgin and West to volley with us. They are going to be looking to hit every chance they get and we are going to have to have that same mind set.”
