After sweeping former district rival Danville (3-23) Monday night, 3-0, the Lady Titans volleyball team returned to the court Tuesday night to take on the Lady Rockets of Rockcastle County (6-12).
It was back and forth in the opening game with the two teams remaining within two points of each other through the first 28 points of the game with Mercer leading 15-13. The Lady Titans held a three point lead over Rockcastle County twice in the match, 16-13 and 17-14, but service errors by Mercer allowed the Lady Rockets back into the game tying it at 17-all.
Mercer wouldn’t lead again until 23-22, but a pair of unforced errors by the Lady Titans set Rockcastle County up with game point, 24-23. Mercer fought off game point six different times as the two teams went into extra points, but could never get out in front with the Lady Rockets who got the win, 31-29.
“We gave them at least five serves in the opening game compared to just one service error by Rockcastle County and that was the difference,” said Mercer Head Coach David Sullivan. “It was really nice to see the team pull together and continue to fight off those points time after time. We just couldn’t depend on our serves to get us back in front at the end and it ended up costing us.”
