The Titans soccer team secured the top seed in the 46th District tournament, as well as a spot in the 12th Region tournament by defeating the Jaguars of East Jessamine (2-7-1), Thursday night, 2-0.

The Jaguars entered the game with the intentions of  packing in their defense while looking for counter attack opportunities in hopes of slowing down the Titans high powered offense.

“You have to give credit to Tom Morgan, East’s head coach,” said Mercer Head Coach Matt Vogel. “They had a very effective game plan coming into the game. They packed in the defense and played some tight, high pressure defense.”

East Jessamine’s defensive minded game plan allowed the Titans to control possession at a rate of 61% and out shot the Jaguars 25-1. Despite Mercer’s offensive dominance, the game remained scoreless through the first half and the majority of the second.

“I told my team at halftime, ‘they are making it tough on us to posses the ball but stay patient,’” said Vogel. “I told them to just keep playing their game, that they would get their chances and they may not finish them all, but don’t get frustrated. If you get frustrated you stop playing your game and that’s when breakdowns occur.”

With the game still level with less than 10 minutes to play it looked like East would leave the Titan’s field with the draw.
