The Burgin volleyball  team (10-7) secured the 46th District two seed Tuesday night defeating the Lady Titans of Mercer (5-10) 3-0.

“Our sights are still set on the post-season,” said Burgin Head Coach Maggie McKnight. “We anticipate seeing Mercer in the first round of the district tournament, so we are looking at the remainder of the season as time to prepare for them in the post season.”

The Lady Bulldogs opened the match strong, executing serves, making crisp passes and sound team defense on their way to a 25-16 win.

“Last week was a rough week for us losing to West Jessamine for the second time this season,” said McKnight. “We spent half of yesterday’s practice in the locker room talking about how we let unforced errors snowball out  of control and we don’t ever want to put ourselves in that position again. So tonight, we returned to what we hang our hat on in this program, fundamentals, basic technique and hustle. We want to work harder than any team we come up against.”

The Lady Titans didn’t make things any easier for themselves in the second game falling behind early 5-1. They did manage to make it a one point game later in the match, 5-4, but were never able to get over the hump losing the second game 25-13.

“Would we liked to have won? Absolutely. But nothing has changed, we will still play Burgin in the district and we’re not unhappy about that,” said Mercer Head Coach David Sullivan. “I told the team after the match we scored more points in the first two games than we did all three games the last time we played them. We just need to keep working and we will get there.”
