After starting the season with a dominating win over Southwestern, 5-0, the Mercer girl’s soccer team suffered back to back losses for the first time since 2010, being shutout by district opponent West Jessamine, 3-0, and longtime rival Boyle County, 2-0. The Lady Titans looked to turn the season around in the Lady Bulldog Classic over the weekend in Elizabethtown.

The tournament did not start out the way the Lady Titans had hoped, falling in the opening game to host John Hardin High School, 3-1. Shannon Murray scored Mercer’s only goal on a penalty kick in the opening half.

Riding a three game losing streak, Mercer bounced back in their next two games, defeating Webster County in both teams second game of the tournament, 8-0, followed by a 4-1 victory over North Laurel in the semi-finals.

Murray increased her tournament goal total to 7, scoring four against Webster County and two against North Laurel. Gentry Brown, Michelle Roby and Madeline Bartley each had two goals total after three games. Brown scored both goals in the Webster win, while Roby and Bartley scored in both games.

The championship game saw a rematch of the tournament opener with Mercer facing the Lady Bulldogs on their home field.
