One look at the Titans 2012 golf roster and it’s clear, experience is not a luxury Mercer gets to enjoy. Bailey Spalding and Tyler Bennett are not only Mercer’s top two golfers, they also make up the team’s entire junior class.
They are joined by lone senior Steven Loyall as the only upperclassmen on the Titans’ roster joined by two sophomores and a handful of freshmaen and eighth graders.
“They (Loyall, Spalding and Bennett) all kind of lead in their own ways,” said Mercer head coach Jay Anderson. “None of them are very vocal guys, but being such a young team, we are going to rely heavily on them to lead by example with their play. They also have a lot of experience which will help the development of our younger players.”
With new rules adopted this year, Anderson and his staff have been able to spend a lot more time with the players in the off-season which he feels will help make up for his teams lack of experience.
“It’s been really important for our younger guys because they are constantly growing and dealing with new distances,” said Anderson. “I’d be willing to say we’ve spent more time than any other program in the state in the off-season.”
In addition to their off-season workouts, coach Anderson also worked on the teams schedule, having them play on courses which regularly hold the regional tournament to help give them an experience edge in the future.
