Mercer Girls Win Fifth Consecutive Region Title
After losing their number one seeded singles player and one and two seeded doubles teams to graduation last year, some thought the Lady Titans strangle hold on the 12th Region tournament would come to an end.
Monday night Mercer girls tennis team, led by head coach Diane Beauchamp showed they weren’t ready to let go just yet, winning their fifth consecutive 12th Region tournament.
“I am thrilled. It has been an unexpected season for us. I didn’t realize they were going to come through like they did,” Beauchamp said. “Everybody did everything they had to do. It’s just amazing.”
The Titans took a 13-11 lead over Casey County heading into Monday’s finals, needing only one of the two matches to secure the title. Christy Ingram and Erin Pigman made it to the doubles finals, while Caitlin Baer advanced to the singles final round. Ingram and Pigman took care business Monday night, winning the best two out of three games over Casey County’s Haley Owens and Allie Tinsley, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Baer’s match was postponed due to rain but was finished Tuesday with Baer defeating Casey County’s Tylyn Leigh.
