It was a tale of two halves Monday night in the Mercer County Lady Titans’ opening game of the season. They trailed 4-1 at halftime, but struck for three goals in the second half to end in a 4-4 tie with the visiting Bethlehem Lady Banshees.

With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Chelsea Moore scored from 25 yards out to tie the game at four. The Bethlehem goalkeeper came out of the box in an attempt to clear the ball, but tripped, leaving a wide open net.

“I was just hoping that I could get it on frame,” said Moore, who also had two assists in the game.

The game didn’t start as well for the Lady Titans, though.

Twenty-two minutes into the first half, the Lady Banshees scored on a goal by senior Megan Spalding. Four minutes later freshman Abigail Proctor added the first of her two goals, putting Bethlehem ahead 2-0.

“Maybe it was a little bit of first game jitters, but I think it was really just a lack of execution early on,” said lady Titans head coach Tony Brown.

In the thirty-first minute, sophomore Lexy Lake, who didn’t play soccer last season, scored the Lady Titans’ first goal of the season on an assist from Moore. But it didn’t take long for Bethlehem, who defeated Mercer County 4-2 on September 24 last year, to answer back.

With four minutes left in the first-half, Proctor scored again to push rhe Lady Banshees lead to 3-1. Two minutes later freshman Maddie Sparks made it 4-1.

“Most of our mistakes came out of the back today. We knew coming in that this team was going to be very technical,” said Brown. “We told them from the beginning that you can’t stab at the ball because they are just going to make a move and go around you, and that is what they did.”
