The Mercer County boys soccer team was one win shy of making it to the KHSAA State Tournament a year ago, as they fell to Boyle County, 3-2, in the 12th Region Championship. This year they are back for revenge and look to prove that they are not only the top team in the 12th Region, but one of the top teams in the state.
Getting back to the state tournament for the first time since 2012 will start with the leadership of All-State players a year ago, Sawyer Ransdell and Garrett Dean.
Ransdell, a senior, anchored the defense last year which had eight shutouts and allowed only an average of one goal per game, which was 13th best in the state.
Dean, a junior, controlled the tempo as a center-midfielder. He finished the season with five goals and two assists.
“We need Sawyer and Garrett to just show leadership. We are relying on those two to lead us,” said Mercer County Head Coach Garrett Stark.
Senior Drew Angel will also be expected to have a big contribution this season, as he will be a team captain along with Ransdell and Dean.
