Burgin introduced a familiar face as their new head basketball coach last week. Don Irvine will take over for Brian Kirk, who left to return home to coach his alma-mater, Augusta High School.

Irvine is returning to Burgin, where he coached for three years in the 1980’s and again from 2003-2012.

“I missed coaching and being a part of the team and the competitive environment. I love Burgin school and the students here,” said Irvine. “I felt I had given up the position (in 2012) that I was always happiest at as a coach.”

After Kirk, who compiled a 15-68 record in his three years at Burgin, left to return home, the Burgin administration didn’t waste time looking for a replacement.

“The administration came to me right after Coach Kirk announced to them that he had taken another job and asked me if I was interested. I told them that I was, but wanted to think about it for a few days. I had to talk to my doctor about my health and talk to my family about the commitment I was about to make,” said Irvine.
