Titans Soccer Beat District Rival In Thriller

It was such an exciting battle between district rivals Mercer County and last year’s 12th Region Champion, the West Jessamine Colts Thursday night that fans were right on the edge of the field watching the final moments of the game.

The first half of the game started out slow, with both teams possessing the ball in the middle of the field with no real chances of scoring.

With five minutes left in the first half, Mercer County had an opportunity from 15-yards out, but a West Jeassamine defender slid in and took the ball from freshman forward Brandon Ballard just as he was about to shoot.

As the pregame national anthem began at the Mercer County versus Bowling Green football game, so did the pouring rain, which resulted in sloppy play from both teams in the first half.

Mercer County came into the game looking to start the season off on the right foot after having one of its best seasons in school history a year ago, while the Purples of Bowling Green were looking to extend their winning streak to 45 games.

Pardue Expects More Success in Third Season

The Mercer County Titans Football team is coming off of its best season since the team won the 2006 State Championship. The team finished with an 8-5 record and advanced to the third round in state last year, all despite losing their starting quarterback, Drew Davis, to an  injury mid-way through the season. Even though many spectators thought the Titans over-achieved by defeating Boyle County on the round in the second round of the state tournament and by making it to the final-eight, thirdyear Mercer County Head Coach Chris Pardue expects the team to make even further strides this season.

With the loss of seven seniors off of a 2013 team that went 10-8-3, finished as 46th District runners-up and were semi-finalists in the 12th  Region Tournament, most coaches would expect a rebuilding year. However,  Mercer County Lady Titan's  Soccer Head Coach Tony Brown doesn't see it that way. Brown expects the 2014 team to pick up right where last year’s team left off and make even bigger strides towards their quest of becoming 12th Region champions.
